Most small, out-of-the-way, family-owned wineries give tours only by appointment. These are the wineries that can be the most interesting, and that will give you a chance to actually talk with the winemaker herself (or himself). To visit these wineries, call in advance. While you may be able to set up an appointment the same day, or the next day if you're spending the night in the valley, you're better off phoning before you even come to the valley.
Next time you're planning a trip, decide which small wineries make wines you particularly like,
and phone them to see if you can set up a personalized tour and tasting at their facilities.
It will be memorable. (By the way, this also works even for the larger wineries that give
public tours. You might have your local wine shop call the winery and tell them you're
a special customer who would like a private tour.) with name, address and phone number, click here.
